It's official. FC Gold Pride have earned the title of WPS Champions. After a memorable regular season campaign with a 16-3-5 record, they sealed the deal against the Philly Cheesesteaks at Pioneer Stadium on September 26.
With a near sell out crowd on hand (I think they sold all but 175 seats or so), fans witnessed some great possession soccer, quality footwork and some great finishing.
Some fans noticed something a bit more fundamental. No flat feet.
On the pitch of the U9 Soccer Monkeys, a strange thing happened this past week at practice as we were working on nothing less than possession passing, the shrill cry of one of the young players: "No Flat Feet! You'd never see FC Gold Pride do that!"
If that isn't proof that Women's Pro Soccer isn't inspirational for young girls, I don't know what is. That young lady earned the right to wear the captain's armband this weekend as the Monkeys will take on the Panther Cubs.
The experience reminds me of a call to action written by a Women's Soccer Coach, Shek Borkowski in a recent blog post.
Mr. Borkowski cites the importance of WPS to Women's Football around the world: "Since the 1980’s female football players around the world have dreamed about coming to America to play.
Competition was good and women’s football was accepted, unlike in their home countries."He calls on youth soccer supporters, parents, coaches and referees, namely those within 50 miles of a WPS team to support their teams by buying a season ticket.
